HANDWRITTEN SONGS

Jim Reeves wasn't always the smooth balladeer that many fans have come to love. He did a lot of experimenting with styles of music, and was a prolific songwriter. Some of his compositions were very good, while others...well, you be the judge.

In my book, "Jim Reeves: His Untold Story," I talk extensively about Jim's songwriting, including his collaboration with a childhood friend, a woman who was his lover in Hollywood, and others.

Here is a small selection of songs that Jim out wrote in his own hand. He would scribble on whatever was handy — on pieces of notebook paper, hotel stationery, envelopes, scrap paper, etc. It appears that whenever the mood struck him, and no matter where he was, he would jot down some lyrics. Sometimes he merely copied a song he had heard elsewhere and wanted to learn so he could perform it on stage (such as the Bob Wills tune, "Faded Love"). Other times he originated the song. Often he would mark the guitar chords in the margin.

As you can see, Jim's repertoire was quite diverse. (Click on the scans to enlarge).
